Tourism Committee, Marshall Chamber of Commerce Committee members present: Arlene Borchers, Stan Moore, Bill Orendorff, Ken Yowell and Cynthia Crawford Also attending: Rachel Harper from the Democrat-News Chair Stan Moore called the meeting to order. Meeting dates are set for the 3rd Thursdays of each month, 9 a.m. at the Saline County Extension Center with the exception of May, which will be the 4th Thursday. May 24 Ken Yowell distributed the Marshall Parks and Recreation Department Activity Guide. Nice look to the publication! The Chamber’s mailing distribution project list was circulated. The program is well received – from family reunions and church retreats to large professional meetings. The print quality of all mailing pieces needs to be high. When plastic bags are ordered again, an 81/2 x 11 printed piece needs to fit in the bag. Remember the Slater Blues Festival is late June. 150-200 Shriner’s parade units will be in Marshall May 12. Following the parade, there will be a meal at the Fair Grounds for Shriners. There may be over 1,000 here for the event. We hope Marshall will be on the annual Shriner’s parade circuit. Arlene Borchers reported that Division of Tourism Director Luetkemeyer and Mary Ellen McVickers will have a FAM (familiarization) tour in the area May 9. There is a luncheon in Blackwater and then on to Arrow Rock and Marshall. He will spend 30 minutes in Marshall. Last year he toured the Jim Park and Water Garden and the historical society. Ideas – city park, skate park, Nicholas/Beasley. Arlene is key this day. Jeff Stubblefield, Bill Orendorff, Beck Plattner, Rose Anne Huck, Dick Hassler, Brownie Brown may want to meet at noon at Blackwater (11:30 at Ironhorse Hotel). One representative can get in the VIP car at Arrow Rock and travel to Marshall. Arlene has 25 duck race tickets to sell for the Boonslick Area Tourism Group. Bill Orendorff expressed that the Univ of MN notebook materials look very helpful. They are available to be borrowed from the Extension Center. Cynthia distributed a workshop flyer on volunteers in response to an educational need that affiliates identified in January. The group approved the workshop. Cynthia presented a list of tourism ideas and planted a seed of thought about this committee bringing leadership to a one-day regional conference on tourism. Stan suggested hiring Poole Advertising to work on the DMO application. Stan moved and it was seconded to approach Poole Advertising to do this work. Motion passed. Stan made a presentation to the Tourism Commission yesterday summarizing 2006 work. The Commission continues to be supportive and likes the umbrella/affiliate approach. The door is certainly open for additional affiliates to join in the 2008 grant proposal to the Tourism Commission. This committee continues to be convinced that tourism isn’t best done in isolation, but by promoting a regional concept and a collection of tourism opportunities. Ken reported there are 13 Missouri Visitor Centers in Missouri. They have been very supportive of distributing the Marshall Tourism brochures. An ample supply of the smaller brochures is available for use in 2007. The visitor’s guide (large brochure) will be reprinted in 2007. The map page needs to be finetuned. Need to designate where the hospital is, location of the memorial gardens by the airport and other major locations. There is a need for tourism education about Marshall within the community. There is a need to work on signage within the city – i.e. directions to the park. Blue hospital signs. Golf course. The newspaper continues to be a great resource for community education. Rachel Harper suggested a three picture approach promoting the use of the brochure, use of the web site, the distribution of the mailing packet. They are looking for the face of the tourism committee. Cynthia made a motion and it was seconded to nominate Rose Anne. Motion passed. How about an award to “counter staff” if they can produce a Marshall Tourism brochure in less than one minute? $5 bill? Free meal? Gift sack?
Follow-up needed from today’s meeting: Stan: DMO designation from State Department of Tourism. Find out what the details are in next 3 or 4 months. Stan suggested using grant funds to hire the application to be written. Can Poole Advertising contract with us for this? Cynthia: Training on working with volunteers – scheduled for August and September. Cynthia: Training for sidewalk ambassadors. Community greeters like motel and fuel stations. Round of civic groups, as well. Need to know about the brochure. Need to know that what they say is key. Also populate community calendar and use community website. Use Chamber mailing capacity Also some business presentations – HR departments, schools. Ken and Cynthia: Eye on Marshall –represent tourism group at the event April 24. Rose Anne: The newspaper continues to be a great resource for community education about brochure availability, web site and packet mailing. Rose Anne asked to work with Rachel for the pictures.
