Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee

August 19, 2009

Attending:  Stan Moore, Ken Yowell, Pam Thomeczek,  Arline Borchers and Cynthia Crawford

Stan called the meeting to order at 9 a.m.

Pam moved and it was seconded to approve the June meeting minutes.  Motion passed.

Stan announced that final approval has been given for the grant from the Div. of Tourism for website development. The updated website  www.visitmarshallmo.com is published and working well.  All committee members need to work on details and keeping the website up to date.  These need to be passed on to Pam T.

There are two six-month grants of $2500 available per year (requires a match of $2500).  The marshallmo website will be one. There is potential for a second six month grant.  Be thinking about options.

It is time to contact the affiliates to get feedback and impact from their current grant.  The grant for next year is due generally late in October for 2010.  They will be invited to make presentations in September to this committee.

In 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and there will be significant efforts in historic tourism in the area.

Stan showed a Sedalia Democrat newspaper that features a Fairs and Festivals section on Thursdays.  We need to be feeding Saline County events into the Sedalia newspaper.  Missouri Ruralist is another option.

To honor sunshine laws, the Saline County Extension Center is requested to post a meeting announcement on the office door.  The Chamber of Commerce office will serve as the custodian of minutes and records.

It is time to elect a chair and recording secretary of this committee as the new chamber fiscal year gets into full swing. Pam moved and it was seconded for Stan to serve as chair and Cynthia to serve as recording secretary for the coming year.  Motion passed.

Suggestions for changes/edits to the Marshall Tourism brochure need to be offered before the end of the year.

The Old Trails Regional Tourism Partners (OTRTP) is moving forward.  They appreciate the support from this committee.  Stan serves as treasurer.

The Scenic Byways Designation is close to being submitted by OTRTP.  A decision may be in place by the end of the year.

There is a meeting August 24 to work on a tourism inventory, county by county, to feed into OTRTP.  Stan will be asking for help from community
members.  It is in electronic form now.

Nicholas Beasley has a new four panel brochure printed.  They want to distribute the brochure in the visitor’s centers around Missouri.

Arline worked at the State Fair on August 14 and promoted the area.

Arline showed a picture of the quilt that will be raffled in support of the Boonslick Tourism Commission.  9 quilts have been placed on barns.  A grant from the MO arts council will fund the next 12 quilt blocks to be placed on barns.  This will be part of the national quilt clothes line.

November 19 is an OTRTP educational event from 10-3 hosted by Missouri Valley College.  Kelli Hepler and John Whiteman, Colorado, will be the featured presenters.

Meeting adjourned at 10 a.m.

Next meeting is September 30 at 9 a.m.
