Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism CommitteeJuly 27, 2011 Attending: Stan Moore, Marshon Stephenson-Umana, Pam Thomeczek, Larry Arrowood, Sarah Reed, Cynthia Crawford Arline Borchers moved and it was seconded to approve the June meeting minutes. The Chamber is in the process of hiring a new support staff person. The committee is enthusiastic about the fall Missouri Life ad that was circulated. Grant work with the state is on schedule. The scenic by-ways project requires public hearings. The hearing in Saline County will be August 30 at the Saline County Extension Center probably from 5-7 p.m. The website work is progressing for Old Trails. http://www.oldtrails.net/ The Marshall tourism website continues to be important for marketing http://visitmarshallmo.com/ Boonslick Tourism Council map is in place for the quilts and barns. The public is invited to a barn quilt dedication August 4 at 11:30 a.m. The block is Indian maize – near Van Meter Park. The Buie block is completed. They have a grant for the MO Arts Council to put up the quilt blocks. Stan is working on tourism tax guideline revisions for the Commission to consider. Their next meeting is August 24. Stan will circulate proposed changes to the committee prior to that meeting. The Grey Ghost Trails brochure was distributed. The driving trail is developed by Greg Walk and is a civil war tour. Larry announced that plans for something wonderful in the Jim garden Plans have been impacted by the hot weather. The next event is August 28 from 7-8. Free ice cream and Dave Para and Kathy Barton will be there. Don’t miss it! Larry showed a concept of “A double dip of fun” that emphasizes a win/win for Arrow Rock and Marshall. The group was enthusiastic. Pam reminded the committee that it is imperative to keep the website up to date. A mechanism needs to be put in place to constantly monitor and update the pages. Poole has offered to do updates in the interim. She complimented the Democrat News publication “Welcome to Marshall.” The next meeting is THURSDAY August 25 at 9 a.m. Saline County Extension Center.
