Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee
July 28, 2010
Present: Stan Moore, Cynthia Crawford, Jill Murray, Linda Smith & Pam Thomeczek
Chair Stan Moore called the meeting to order at 9 am
Linda Smith is the new Vice President of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce and came as a guest of the Tourism Committee.
Items on the agenda:
1. Minutes Approved - Cynthia Crawford made the motion to approve the minutes from the last meeting, Pam Thomeczek seconded it, motion passed.
2. Old Trails Regional Tourism Partnership update - The Old Trails Regional Tourism Partnership (OTRTP) group was recently awarded one of two grants placed in Missouri (Lake of the Ozarks was the other) by the USDA for the Stronger Economies Together (SET) Pilot Program. The grant will focus on developing and implementing a regional economic development strategy for the group. Prior to the first SET meeting scheduled for August 13th in Higginsville, Janie Dunning, the Missouri State Director for USDA is tentatively planning a formal announcement on Thursday, August 5th. The location of the announcement has not been determined yet
3. Marshall Tourism Commission Update – Grant request for Santa Fe Trail Days advertising & rack cards & the ad on the new Chamber city/county map promoting the website, www.visitmarshallmocom, were both approved. The next Tourism Commission meeting is set for August 18, 2010.
4. Chamber Tourism Project List – items listed below
- Marshall Tourism Grant/Affiliate communication – Forms are being revised for affiliates to fill out for the tourism grant. A meeting is scheduled for August 11, 2010, 9 a.m. at the Extension Office at 353 S Lafayette Ave, Marshall, MO. to meet with current affiliates and new prospective affiliates on changes, ideas and grant information for 2011. Discussion on ways to get the word out to new applicants interested, psa, newsletters, etc. Cynthia Crawford will do a presentation on how to submit your event for free on the visitmarshallmo.com website.
- Missouri Department of Tourism Grant - application due 09-01-10
Quotes from Missouri Life Magazine for the funding period Jan-June 2011 were presented which included a one page ad and two 2 page spreads promoting the city of Marshall and the affiliate groups along with a calendar of events. Internet advertising and e-newsletter ads were also included in this quote. Two prices were quoted – run of book and premium position. The committee approved the premium position quote pending funding from the tourism commission.
Poole Advertising also submitted quotes for the same funding period for designing the ads to be placed in Missouri Life Magazine
- Visitmarshallmo.com Website – Ideas were discussed on how to promote the website and the calendar of events. Some mentioned were; chamber newsletter, mailings to the area schools, email agencies & organizations.
- Share the Day at the MO State Fair – Chamber Tourism Committee got approval to share the Dept. of Tourism booth at the Mo. State Fair on August 20th (Friday). The schedule was discussed and will be available at the August 11th meeting for the affiliates to sign up to work the booth handing out brochures for their respective events.
- I-70 Signage – Contact will be made to Brendon Norris to determine annual cost and other details for hwy signage. “Attraction” signs are on East and West side of Marshall Junction on I-70.
- Missouri Valley College – New Hospitality & Tourism Management Program was discussed and hopefully will present opportunities to partner with local tourism activities in the future.
5. Other
Next meeting will be held August 25, 2010 at the Saline County Extension Office @ 9:00 am.
