Minutes of the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee

July 24, 2008

Present: Stan Moore, Mike Green, Ken Yowell, Angie Wells, Cynthia Crawford

Guests:  Mickie Uhrig, Norma Jeane Ferguson, Linda Cleveland, Donna Rothermich

Chair Stan Moore called the meeting to order at 9 a.m.

Angie Wells moved and it was seconded to approve the minutes of the June meeting. Motion passed.

Stan announced that the 2009 requests to the Tourism Commission are due about the 3rd week in October.

The Marshall Quilt Guild is exploring having a display of Gee’s Bend African-American quilts as part of the quilt show in 2009.

The Marshall Quilt guild show is set for the last weekend of September 2008.

Three representatives from the Quilt Guild discussed their plans for 2009.  The committee complimented the group for getting their tri-folds distributed around the state.  The mailing labels the group provides are up to date.  The flyer is well done.

Stan outlined the possibility of moving to matching grants for affiliates.

The committee suggested that at some point the Barns and Quilts project and the Marshall Quilt Guild may want to have some cooperative marketing that is a mutual benefit.

Cynthia Crawford moved and it was seconded that Stan Moore serve as this committee’s representative to the Old Trails project and that Rose Ann Huck be asked to serve as alternate.  Motion passed.  Cynthia will plan to attend the meetings as an ex officio member.

By-ways meeting August 6, 7-9 p.m. at the Saline County Extension Center.

Old Trails day seminar July 30, 10-2 at the Saline County Extension Center.

Angie Wells will communicate with the tourism commission to see if they would like the Chamber of Commerce tourism committee’s  feedback and ideas for fine-tuning the application and decision making process for tourism tax dollars.  Angie will also clarify this committee’s role in this year’s process.  Is it the same as in past years or will all applications be funneled through this committee?

If Stan or Ken are out of state, additional tourism committee officers may need to sign off on paperwork to have affiliates reimbursed.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 p.m.

Next meeting date 3rd Thursday in August, 9 a.m. at the Saline County Extension Center.
