industry in Marshall, and we welcome the public to join us in our mission to make Marshall a hot spot for tourism. Below are some recent Planning Reports from the meetings of the Marshall Tourism Committee.
If you have any comments, questions, or new ideas to share with the Marshall Chamber of Commerce Present: Stan Moore, Betty Lenz, Kathy Cary, Arlene Borchers, Larry Arrowood, Barb Berlin, Pam Thomeczek, Carolyn Pearson, and Sarah Reed from Marshall Democrat News Stan Moore, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 10:15 and asked for any changes or additions to the minutes from the August 22nd tourism meeting, There being none; Pam Thomeczek made a motion to approve, seconded by Larry Arrowood. Motion passed. Department of Tourism Grant for Jan to July of 2013 was submitted by the Chamber prior to the September 4th deadline. Should hear back by November 30th. Visitmarshallmo web site statistics for the month of August were reviewed. 970 visits from a search engine source, 290 visits from “Links”, and 131 direct visits from visitmarshallmo.com. Bid from Poole Communications for proposed updates to visitmarshallmo.com tourism web site was reviewed. Current web site was created over 5 years ago revisions will allow changes and updates at local level (MSDC) reduce cost of keeping it current. www.visitmarshallmo.com Summary of 2013 grant funds showed of the $93,535.00 approved, $44,370.36 has been disbursed and $49,164.64 remaining. Stan estimated there would be 4 or 5 thousand that probably would not be disbursed and applied back to the Tourism Commission’s general grant fund pool. Some events are planned a year in advance and things change in the course of a year and result in grant funds not being spent as planned. Marshall Brochure discussion – Pam presented information on a “brochure” type format and a “booklet” type format. Cost to mail a single brochure was $.44 while the booklet was $.65. General agreement was to stay with the brochure type format. Request for bids will be sent to Green Printers and Poole Communications for 2013 grant application. Page 2 Battle of Marshall – waiting to hear update from Marshall Cultural Council on planned activities. Missouri Life Ad – Pam reported the ad for the December issue was ready – Hanging of the Greens in Arrow Rock changed the date and is going to be held prior to the December issue and therefore was not included this year. Friends of Jim – Larry reported on the Garage Sale October 4th, 5th, and 6th at the Friends of Jim Building – proceeds going to the building fund. www.jimthewonderdog.com Country Patchwork Quilt Guild Betty and Kathy reported on the 25th annual show September 29th and 30th at the Martin Center in Marshall. Attendance is expected to be 450 to 500 people – maybe 501. www.countrypatchworkquilters.com Nicholas-Beazley – Barb reported they will be serving breakfast and lunch this weekend for the Quilt Show in the Martin Center building. www.nicholasbeazley.org MSDC Project List was distributed – Stan reported the Project List is used primarily to communicate to the Tourism Commission the activities of the Tourism Committee and MSDC on an on-going basis. Saline County Farm Toy Show - 660-886-9908 - (to be held in January 2013) was submitted to the Rural Missouri magazine for insertion in the “What’s Happening” section – plans are to continue to submit Saline County Events on an on-going basis going forward. 2013 Tourism Grant – Stan reviewed the time frames for compiling the 2013 grant – deadline of October 31st for all grant requests to be turned in to the MSDC Office. Tourism Committee will review all requests on November 7th meeting – and grant will be compiled and turned in to the City by November 30th. Tourism Grant applications are available at www.visitmarshallmo.com, at the MSDC Office or at the City Offices. Next meeting date – November 7th at 9:00 am at the MSDC Office.
